I buy mine fresh at the source and only "store" it on my rig for a few days as I use it.
For storage you need to think 30 days or less. Longer term storage is really a bad idea. 12.5% SH will be 10% in 35 days and it falls rapidly after that. If you do plan to store straigh SH requires glued/welded schedule 80 fittings and grey/black or otherwise dark specially designed tanks for proper storage. I think a lot of guys use dark 55 gallon drums.

I have a tank on the back side of my property in the shade and covered with a tarp as well.
Much like the "well informed" matt who has apparently done his homework, or knows his chit! I buy only what I need for a week or two....I time it with the truck deliveries

I learned it all at RCIA baby!

The cooler and darker the better. I agree with almost everything that you said Matthew. I disagree with storing it in dark containers. Dark colors absorb light which translates into heat. Heat & UV rays of the sun are the 2 things that cause SH to loose its potency.

True,
I guess I should have said:
Store in containers that will protect from UV rays.

I been cleaning for 12 years and every winter I have a 55 gallon drum that sits all winter long and when spring arrives I use it and it works, so not really sure what the big deal is, if it appears a little weak just boost it up.
Winters in NJ lack heat and I assume its covered so...
Winters in Florida still reach 80 degrees and you can get a sunburn in an hour, lol

I just finidhed reading some older posts on the storage of SH.
Here is my problem. I have be storing it in my box truck but I found out at the NOVA meeting that I have a real problem carrying 100 gals of SH and about 100 gals of SH mix.
I do not have a garage where I live and I do not live out in the country so I have my truck parked a a public storage facility. I was thinking about renting one of their small units with outside access and placing my big tote inside and having it filled there. Even if I put the lid on should I be concerned about what I might be doing to the units near me.
If that is out of the question, then I have to go to outside storage. Except for maybe putting a white tarp over the tote does anyone have any suggestions? It would be out in the sun all day.
Maybe I should not have gone to the NOVA meeting. Ignorance is Bliss
