okay so after lots of thought and some definate no's I think I got a name for my roof cleaning buisness, I want to run it past the pros on her. Okay here it is. BULLDOG ROOF CLEANIN. well let me have your thoughts.
Probably better than what I chose. I got a little wordy, but it implies what I do and how I intend to do it! Is there a reason for "Bulldog"? Local team? Your tendencies? Nickname? The kids look like a whole bunch of fun.

WHY does it have to say Bulldog Roof Cleaning? I would name my roof cleaning company after nearest major city. People are gonna search for stuff there anyway.
good point how does Coastal roof cleaning sound I want a name that can cover the washington and oregon coast. hmmm I will think about it for a bit. to much else to learn about roof cleaning. I no read read read I am and am takeing notes I will be asking a lot of ? soon.
I was in the same boat struggling with a name, i wanted to blanket in case i wanted to offer future services,
I gave up and went with
ALBANY roof cleaning
You always want to stay professional (thats what sets us apart from the hacks, and small timers even if we are, However i know your hopes as everyones are to get big)
I get what your saying Chris, but I believe creating a brand in your area means more than making sure you are covering your keywords. An example would be like the company ChemDry. You wouldn't have a clue what it is they do unless you've heard of them, yet most people have heard of them and do know what they do. Mallard Systems is another smaller example.
thanks for all thi input guys. my girlfriend thinks I should call it Pacific coast roof cleaning. she says that would cover the coast in washington and oregon.

Bob you better do your research to see if roof cleaning is needed in your area. The last goof ball in your area spent a month building his rig to only find out that their really wasn't a need for roof cleaning in the area?
oh contrare mo frare, what ever that means. there is more moss and algae and stained up roofs in this area than you can imagine, I mean atleast 8 out of everry ten roofs has moss, and algae stains. The problem is letting them no that they have a problem and I have a cure. door to door sales and teaching them. I mean if they don't no its a problem then your right I won't do well. educate the ones that listen and land a job or two in the neighborhood. then the rest will follow. I just no it, I can do it. thanks for the head up
I also think you need to call your company something people will search the internet for or it will be harder to find your business, some key words you should try to use in your name are the city, county, roof, shingle, state and cleaning.
The people around here are slow to catch on we have the same thing 8 out of 10 and 1 out of 10 understands and cares. It seems like a no brainer easy sell however that is not always the case, you still have to educate them any way possible. Maybe bulldog would make since because you might need to rub their nose into it...Good luck!
It dosn't matter what you want the name to be, it only matters that your customers think. The point about branding like Mallard and Chemdry is valid but probably way out of the league for most of us. Branding an image and promoting it to become a household name takes hundreds of thousands of dollars. Both those companies have spent millions promoting themselves. So for a startup without hundreds of thousands to invest I would stick with whatever your customers would recognize. Changing your name for branding or adding a surname or system name will easily solve the problem in the future if you make it big. Steve jobs is a good example, no one calls their i-phone an apple, each product thye sell is individually promoted under it's own name.

+10 Great post.
Use something that sounds professional, people will remember and will rank in searches.
Using something like bulldog, pitbull, poodle, cute puppy, kitten, dog-with-the-runs, etc....is not something that will really help you with the internet rankings unless you are picking up dog crap, walk the dogs, are a vet, dog groomer, etc... that is the category that you will end up in most of the time when doing searches on the internet.
Keeping a more professional name and like what Chris T says, try to make it relate to where you are or have the job you do as part of the name will help a lot in the rankings.
I added roof cleaning a while after I came up with the name of my business and did not want to change the name of the business because I do other kinds of cleaning besides roof cleaning. I do fleet washing, house washing, concrete cleaning, building cleaning, heavy equipment cleaning, etc....
Take your time and come up with something that you really like but check and make sure that nobody there has that name before you order the stationery, shirts, etc...
Good luck.
