First, I would like to say hi to all in the Roof Cleaning Forum. I've been looking at old posts over the winter to try and understand how to correctly apply a solution to roofs that make a house look new again. I bought a Delvan Fatboy and mixed my Apple cider Sauce and went to work. The only thing I can think of that I did wrong was get part of the roof wet because I was also cleaning the gutters out and got part of the roof wet prior to appling the solution. Also, I,m not sure my apple cider sauce was not strong enough. I have a 35 gallon tank, 20 gallons of water, 15 gallons SH, 5 lbs. TSP, 64 ounces Isopropyl Alcohol, 1/2 bottle of Dawn. I figured the part of the roof that I got wet deluted the solution and it just didn't stick, but even the other part of the roof didn't come that clean and left a dingy look. After an hour I decided to rinse an agitate some of the hard stains to see if it would break it up and it looked better but not up to standards. This is a total redo, I explained to the customer that a good rain would take most of the dead mold away but I need to make this right. This picture is before the wash. Do you think my solution was strong enough and if you get the shingle wet prior to the application will it delute it? Appreciate any thoughts. I'll take some more pictures before the redo so you can see the difference.
Using 15 gal of SH in a 35 gal mix would give you a 42% solution of SH to H2O. More than enough to clean the roof in the picture. Was the SH fresh? You will probably want to increase the amount of dawn given the pitch of the roof. Buy a gallon of Ammonyx Lo from Lori at PWP. Works much better than dawn and is cheaper.
Lots of things can affect performance: 1) what was the outside temp when you did the roof? 2) were the shingles wet with dew, rain, moisture? 3)Where did you get your SH from, was it fresh?
Thats what I would guessimate in the scenario you have presented.
Your ratios sound right, if not a little hot. I spray most of my roofs @ 30-35%
Did the algae noticeably change colors from black to brown? If so, then its likely dead and a rinsing issue. Its been my experience the fat boy doesn't have the PSI to effectively rinse.
That roof should clean up beautifully!

My SH is a couple of months old and I don't know how long it's sat in the warehouse but seams to be good enough for pressure washing houses. I'm getting ready to purchase some more because business is picking up, I can't find regular SH in the area so I use 12.5 Liquiclor and it works the same I hope. Thanks for advice on the Ammonyx Lo, I've seen where others have been using that instead of Dawn. When I sprayed the solution it just didn't seem like it foamed to good anyway so I'm getting ready to call Lori.
I would say the bleach has got weak, since it set in those drums for a few months. You can use it on houses but will not do the damage to the mold on the roof though.
Too many factors to pinpoint a single problem... A couple of observations. I think 35 gallons is cutting it close on this roof. This roof is light colored; therefore spotting will be more noticeable and may require you to touch up afterwards.
SH sitting for a couple months doesn't help - especially if you are only using 35 gallons. I hope you had more SH on site. I would never rely on perfection - you have surprises like today. And why rinse? After an hour, you may have been able to hit the affected spots again and be done...
Just my two cents, but the SH really shouldn't sit over 3 weeks or will most likely loose its potency.
Lastly, use at least 1oz of Dawn per gallon of solution for walkable roofs and / or 2oz per gallon for steep roofs. It will help it stick to the roof so it can clean.
Just my two cents, but the SH really shouldn't sit over 3 weeks or will most likely loose its potency.
It might still be good in your area for 3 weeks but in Texas it lasts less than that even when kept in the shade and out of the sun during the summer. Temperature and the ultraviolet rays of the sun turn SH back to salt water. You also have to take into effect how long has it been since it was made and whether it sat in a 55 gallon drum exposed to the sunlight or was poured into your own container.
map -911 It would be very helpful if you could go ahead and post the pictures of how it looks after your treatment. From reading your post, I believe this posted pic is of the job before you began. Do you have a pic of how it look currently?

I have stated this many times. The worst thing you did wrong was try and start cleaning roofs before you read enough and before you asked any professionals if what you were doing was going to work. Gets em every time. Lesson learned and now your here, so welcome and hello. You can get that roof clean and we will now help you. Get us some more pics.
I'll swing by and take a couple more pictures to show how it turned out. The SH has never been in the sun and is kept in a chilly garage Marcus, I do believe it might have been sitting in the warehouse for a while before I picked it up and I'll ask before I get the next how long it's been sitting there. I just purchased some Ammonyx Lo from Lori so it will stick better than Dawn and hopefully I'll make this roof look like new. I appreciate the input from everyone and all the great info.
This is a very light colored roof , what did it actually look like after you srayed it???? was it brown in color? im sure it was , light colored shingles that have been neglected like this one sometimes needs a little light misting again after it dries.. dont trip and keep reading like Bill Boooze stated its all good my friend

I went and took a few pictures of how it looks now after doing the job and the pollen is bad right now so the roof looks a little yellowish but it hasn't rained yet and it's not as bad as I thought. I still see some streaking but how much should I apply if most is gone, or should I hit the whole thing again and be done with it?
Honestly, a good hard rain would clean those streaks right off, but it would need to be a HRAD rain.
If you're going to sauce again, I would only hit the trouble streaks, not the whole roof. Just not needed, and there's more potential for landscape kills.
It looks pretty good. I think thats a very noble effort for you first time out of the gates.

It did look bad in the beginning but now that I have looked at it again it doesn't look that bad. I did this house last Friday and it's suppose to rain Thursday (hopefully) and maybe it just might do the trick, if not I'll hit the bad spots. Thanks for all the suggestions from everyone, I already have some Ammonyx Lo on the way so maybe it will stick better. Just about every house around here has more slope to it than it does in Florida.
When you talk to the customer do you tell them up front that it's going to take a rain for the rest to come off or do you rinse to get it looking good before you leave?
