I bought Sodium Percarbonate from UniVar....thinking it was the stuff to use...until I found out from you fine people that is was all wrong.

Now I'm trying to recoup some of my money on eBay...I bagged and heatsealed 55 pounds of it in 1/2LB bags. NIGHTMARE

Check it out:

Sodium Percarbonate works well as a wood cleaner.  Decks, Fences, Cedar Shingled Roofs.

By itself sodium percarbonate makes a poor roof cleaner. The first thing you need to add is an

additive to help raise the alkalinity of the cleaning solution. This is commonly done by

combining the percarbonate with a material like soda ash. Even better is to use a combination

of soda ash and sodium metasilicate. (Commonly called TSP substitute and can be purchased

in any hardware store.) You also need is to add a little surfactant to the cleaning solution to

help it wet out the surface being cleaned. Asphalt tiles are very porous and you need good

wetting by the cleaning solution to remove the mold and mildew in the nooks and crannies of

the roofing material. This can easily be accomplished by adding a little dish liquid (like Dawn)

to the cleaning solution before use. There are accelerators that can also be added. These

materials accelerate the release of oxygen of the sodium percarbonate increasing the

bleaching and cleaning power. If you can get TAED (tetra acetyl ethylene diamine) that works

very well but you have to know how to use it to get the best performance. There are other

proprietary accelerators that can be used. Lastly, do not use any oxygen bleach products with

less than 75% sodium percarbonate. If you do you may be disappointed. Natural Choices

manufactures an oxygen bleach based product called Exterior ProX Deck and Patio Cleaner

(80% or more sodium percarbonate) that does an excellent job on exterior surfaces like

siding, decks, roofs, fences and masonry. It contains all of the ingredient cited previously in

their proper proportions. We also do proprietary formulations if a more robust product is

needed. As the chemist who has been formulating oxygen bleach products for over 15 years I

can assure Natural Choices has the best quality and performance available for oxygen bleach

based exterior cleaning products.

WELCOME  To the RCIA Dr Myers!!!!!
ALL of us roof cleaners would LOVE to get away from Chlorine if we could. Feel FREE to post all about your stuff here on our forum! Can you deliver something that will clean as good as Sodium Hypochlorite at a similar price ? I am familiar with TAED and the US Patents reference other Percorbonate activators. The problem we had when using it years ago was it required a rinse. You still needed a little bit of pressure to clean it properly. Talk to US !

just used some this morning while cleaning upholstery.  You can actually bleach the fibers if you're not careful but the seat cushion looked so bad with some gross mildew spots that I made a paste and applied it.

If I were anywhere near you I'd have bought the stuff off you for deck cleaning.

Chris,

Be carefull how strong you use sodium percab as a cleaner. It will strip a lot of stains all the way down to the wood. It is my preferred stripper when I can use it on those stains because it is much safer than sodium hydroxide.

But that is a topic for another forum.....
