Besides the SH tester kit that can only test up to 10%. Is there any other special tricks of the trade you guys know of to find out if you are getting fresh or old SH? I went to my local pool place and they said it was a week old and only available in 1 gallon jugs.
Good Question!!! Is there a date on the SH container or do you just have to believe what the sale's cluck says. Its winter here in NY and last years supply is probably still on the shelf.
I know that my supplier fills his 1, 2.5, 5, 15 and 55 gallon containers from his bulk tanks. Even if there is a date on the carboy that you get, it probably isn't correct. In fact when I order 5 gallon carboys to take along as back ups, they usually fill them when I call.
It probably comes down to how quickly your supplier turns over their SH. If you can find one that sells bulk SH, you are probably going to ensure that you get fresh stuff.
I have never bought from a chemical company that orders SH in 55 gallon containers, so I don't know if those suppliers are required to put dates on the drums.

well...there is a downside to this method. I have to go find another ground man after that...lol.
I usually just touch the sh with my finger tip. If it turn white really quick, its fresh stuff.
You GOTTA read this...I am sorry if Changed the topic a bit but...
I hope to give you all a heck of a CHUCKLE....LOLOLOLOLOLOL
When you wrote this above i remembered this and had to share it.....
Picture this...I am going to try to type it as it happened...
I had picked up a helper one time that I hired from a day labor pool when I lost my regular guy due to his wife having a baby that day.
We had just picked up a batch of fresh chlorine and went to the jobsite. I was asking him to look in one of my tool bins for my test kit to check the chlorine level in my other tank which had been sitting for 4-5 days.
He says he can't find it but says to me, I was taught, when I cleaned pools that you put your finger in the container and get some chlorine on it and "if it turns white quickly, its real good stuff"
So, he tested the weak batch with his "finger test" and said it wasn't so strong so he suggested I put in more straight SH.
Then he went to the new batch and open the container and put his finger in there and when he pulled it out it was completely covered with Sodium Hypochlorite. He rubbed the new batch between his index finger and thumb and said to me, "YUP, this stuff is GOOD some goodn'"
Well about 10 minutes later, I look over and the guy is diggin for GOLD about up to his SECOND knuckle (Yuck) with the same damned finger, LOL, LOL, LOL
I figured, he'd been smart enough to wash his hands after his SH finger test......
He Wasn't, LOL , oh god, a few minutes later, the dude is "hoootin and hollerin" all over the damn place.
I had to get this guy and help him flush the SH out of his nose and cranium for pete's sake. It was one doosy of an ordeal and I am not one to laugh at another misery but I just about "fell Out" laughing....afterward (actually, a few times during the ordeal too, truth told)
All this, AFTER I did go thru the safety training I do with all new guys, gloves, mask, eye protection and rinsing hands after touching ANY chems, the ususal....
He didn't listen or he was a few sandwiches , short of a picnic...either way that was his first and LAST day with Roof Clean USA...
Anyway, hope I made a few of you laugh and a few cry...from visualizing this...

Good God, common sense is NOT so common...
Thats funny and scary at the same time! Was there any permanent damage? LOL!!
I remember hearing about someone with a back pack spraying roofs. Now get this. The back pack started leaking and guess where the SH ended up? The crack of his butt!! That musta been painfull! Now up on a roof and this starting to burn..... Back packs would be a move up from pump ups. LOL!! I'm not gonna try it!
