OK, i bought this 275 gal tote tank on craig'slist for $40. It's huge. looks great, would be great to put signs on, BUT it had this resin in it for making marble counter tops. It had this stuff called styrene in it. It was flammable. The guy who sold it said he thought you could steam or pressure wash it out. I spent an hour at the car wash trying to clean it. I was not completely successful. Tomorrow i will call the manufacturer and ask what i can clean it with. Did i just waste my time and money? I am getting ready to do my first house (mine) possibly this weekend.
Never, Never, Never buy a tank that has had chemicals in it. Old food containers are fine but not ones with previous chems. Too much of a pain to clean.
I know they're kind of expensive but it will be worth it in the long run, especially if you have any mishaps with the previous chemical that was in the tank.

Putting it back on Craigslist seems like the way to go. You made a good decision by keeping the board informed of you build plans you may have already saved yourself from a bad chemical reaction??
If there is any type of food prep company or fruit drink company anywhere near you, you can get a tank that will work for almost nothing. In the food industry, these tanks that contain concentrated fruit flavorings, etc., are a SINGLE use item and they get rid of them very cheaply, sometimes FREE. Check it out.
Thanks, I went ahead and spurged and bought new $65 gall leg tank at a tractor supply store for $150. I know it will only do one roof but it will get me started.
Hello Bill, Do you do more than just roofs? I was doing some math today and to make a descent living, it seems you have to conquer around 200 roofs. That is if you are making a $300 profit on each (200 roofs x $300 = $60000.00.) I know a guy can liv on a lot less. What do you think about those figures?
Those figures are probably going to be closer to gross not profit. Insurance, licensing, phone, advertising, chemicals, labor etc. Oh and I forgot the biggest one of all TAXES Then there is the little factor of building your business. If you plan on eating any time during the year then you have to offer other services, especially as a start-up. That is unless you have enough cash to last you a couple years. I thought it was going to be easier than it was at first also. Unless you have the ability to sell an Eskimo a ketchup popsicle in the middle of January. Equipment maintenance and repair is another non anticipated expense. OK is probably about the same as here so the average will be in the 3-500 range some larger homes will be more.
Yep, that sounds like reality alright. It seems like it is good to be diversified. I'm still excited about roof cleaning. I do want to be realistic. If you want to get paid, you have to work hard, no matter what. I'm ok with that. Thanks for your honesty.
Now just thinking out loud here, but, Chlorine + a surfactant is what thousands of businesses use to clean and sterilize with, such as food maufacturing plants, bakeries, fruit & vegie shops, fish markets, hospitals, public rest rooms, shopping centre rest rooms etc. even mold killing showers, bath rooms, toilets & public places there are thousands of areas you could "spray some love" for other companies and industries. chlorine is not only a bleach it is also one of the most widely used sterilizing & germ killing chemicals, think outside of the box, offer to remove mold in you customers showers & bath room, a small pump up sprayer and away you go for an extra ?$30 ? clean & sterilize wheelie bins (trash cans) etc. etc.
What would be a good amount to set aside from every job to go toward repairs?
It all depends on the set up you are using. I would make sure that by the time the season ends you have a slush fund with enough in it to replace every piece and just have that set aside. After that as you use it replenish it.
I'm not so sure of the shower stall cleaning, etc. Personally, with the world as it is today, I am the last person to enter a home to perform a service. In most areas, to protect yourself, you have to be bonded. That in itself is not cheap. Best case scenario, $300.00 additional monthly.
If I were you and not to go against any ideas posted here to generate additional revenue. I would stick to exactly what your name says. "Exterior"
To give you an example: Monday I bid a 5600 sq ft roof for $800, they agreed and as we were standing in the driveway I pointed out the bug attraction around the garage lights as well as some algae growth under the window. I advised the homeowner that our chemicals would clean any area that it came in contact with and to expect some streaking on the walls and possibly on the driveway. To make a long story short , $300.00 for exterior and $125.00 for driveway and small walkway. Upsell, Upsell!
We do most of our upselling during the roof cleaning process as homeowners notice how dirty everything else appears after the roof is cleaned.

did I miss something... shower stall cleaning?????
I keep a small spray bottle of diluted chlorine in the shower all the time, when ever I notice a spot of mold I give it a spray, mold gone, most bathroom mold removing products contain bleach (SH) so I just use my own, much cheaper then buying store stuff
I was actually thinking of trying out a small dosage of the love on my shower floor. The grout is a little unsightly. Of cours i would make sure i had proper ventalation. I like the up saling approach too. Did you say there would be streaking from cleaning those areas on the exterior walls, because the rest of the house would still be dirty? Thus telling the customer his only rational choice, if he wanted those small things cleaned, would be to wash the whole house? and then run off from the house would show how dirty his driveway is? That sounds good to me
