I see that many of you received the same mass email I did from Adam at Shingle Solution. Anyone know if this stuff works? Looks like it's only for protecting and not for cleaning. Pretty sure the Love is all I need but wanted to throw this out there. Here is part of the email.
Shingle Solution is a Clear Sealant. It is waterproof low luster protective film that provides a solid layer of protection to a porous surface such as an asphalt roof shingle. It attaches itself to the individual pores and will act to preserve, protect and beautify the roof of your home. Shingle Solution will form a coat over any previously treated or non-porous surface as well. Shingle Solution is 100% Acrylic Resin and when combined with special ingredients will form a low luster protective film that will provide a beautiful appearance and repel mold and mildew. This product will reduce the chance that your roof will suffer from water damage and will also create an inadequate habitat for the growth of algae and mold. www.shinglesolution.com
Read CAREFULLY...... It says on their own web site that this will void your shingle warranty. It also says the you are NOT to seal the shingle seams. The only way to do this is to get up close and personal with the roof. I don't know about you all but I am not getting on some of these roofs around here. I can hit the peak just fine with my delavan.
Here is an ARMA bulletin on field coatings. Read it and understand. Their product probably does work but at what cost to the home owner and possibly to you and your business?
Besides if this is a new product where is the research? I want proof it does not hurt the shingles.
Hello there and thank you for accepting my email.... ( Everyone ) I meant no harm or intrusion. I appreciate your time and consideration.
Shingle Solution is the culmination of extensive on exposure testing, over 5000 hours to give you an idea... tests will be coming soon, as well as MSDS, and TDS. Shingle Solution is manufactured by a leading paint and roof coatings manufacturer who has many Miami Dade approved roof coatings. Not to mention they've been in business for over 60 years...
Yes, it is likely that any coating will void a shingle manufacturers warranty but, how many homeowners actually have a warranty on a their roof after say a few years anyway??
These coatings are not designed for the NEW roof, they are designed for older, in service roofs ... the ones that get Mold and algae on them as they break down. The ones you see every day...
The Truth About Roofing Warranties.
"Most roof buyers tend to use warranties as one of their primary tools for selecting products. Manufacturers have found that by limiting coverage/liability to "manufacturing defects" they can dramatically increase warranty periods (to 30, 40, or 50 yrs.) on products with functional life cycles of less than 15 yrs. These "defects"occur in 1% of all shingles produced and the warranty does not cover wear from normal exposure. Homeowners need to understand the real functional life expectancy of the materials being considered. These warranties are typical to all roofing material manufacturers. "
Of course the Asphalt Shingle Manufacturers Association is going to recommended that no coatings be applied to their product offerings.. They're in the business of selling shingles! If a coating takes a roof shingle from dilapidated to rejuvenated, keeps it from getting wet, locks down the granules, inhibits mold growth and UV degradation.... Virtually stopping the aging process then the Asphalt Shingle Manufacturers Association sells fewer shingles, this hurts business... so, let's no recommend it. Makes sense...
This is a real product.... In fact we just applied it to an acrylic roof coating engineers home.. who happens to work within a large international company that you'd all be familiar with.. they don't make things, they make things better.. hint.
We have been showing this product to homeowners and contractors here in the Carolina's with great response... if this service isn't in you market now or seems new to you.. it won't be going forward.
Testing and all one needs to make an educated decision will be uploaded to our site by the end of November. Nothing Bogus about it...
Feel free to contact me directly @ 704-553-2633 Thanks again everyone and hope business is good. Regards, Adam Calder Shingle Solution.com

Your quote from another blog: " On another note here is an ARMA document about field coatings and besides they state on their web site that this will void your shingle warranty. How stupid do they think people are?
We do not think that people are stupid and clearly we're not trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes but, rather attempting to inform about market trends, products and new services based on a proven and tested concepts. EXAMPLE: A Black Asphalt roof on commercial building was great, until someone came along and realized that coating it with acrylic is MUCH better on many levels.... well now it's time for the residential market... i.e. coating shingles.... Big firms are beginning to enter this space... we're just a little ahead of the curve.
My email was merely an effort to educate about new technologies that will be in the market place in the near term.
We apologize for emailing you blindly and meant to harm or intrusion. In today's economic climate the more knowledge you have, the more power you have to develop innovative services and solutions.. excuse the pun. My thought behind the email was that you fellas were already on the roof and that logically after a roof was cleaned it could be sprayed... etc.. it makes more than sense, it makes dollars..
I would enjoy a conversation with you to better communicate the value proposition of this solution at any time convenient...

Thank you for you time Pat and all the best

Guys if you want to read more there is a thread at TGS where I did not get one question answered.
Just for you all I did the math and if you do 8 hours a day for 5000 hours that equals 1.71 years of testing.
Adam stated the testing data will be on the site by the end of the month. I will hold further judgement until then. I am skeptical because of the lack of longevity testing.
You go to the home owner and say that I have a product that will make your shingles last for ever. BUT it will also void your warranty. Better run because you are going to get a boot in the back side.
Some where 5 years before recoating comes to mind and to do a 2k house costs alone for the product at todays internet special will be $500 with shipping. Their instructions say you can use a hvlp sprayer to apply but they also say be careful not to seal the shingle seams. On another document on their site it tells the home owner how to clean their roof and then says they can rinse with a pressure washer.
Like I said I am with holding final judgement until I see more documentation.
Well like I said I was going to reserve judgement and I went back and looked at their web site. I was not able to find any more information than was there before. I can protect a roof from algae for 5-7 years for a little more than it costs for the product itself for one application. If they were to come out with more information I would be glad to look at it but for right now I will pass. I am not going to be responsible for voiding any warranty.
Reading this reminds me of a company once based out of Palm Coast Florida. "DURASHIELD" They also advertised a low luster roof coating that could be applied to all types of roofing materials and created a barrier to protect outside elements. Needless to say. This company has vanished. Correct me if I am wrong, but all types of roofing materials expand and contract daily. Wouldn't this movement cause the application to eventually crack and allow the algae to form under it, which makes it virtually impossible to remove. This is exactly what happened with Durashield which was a polymer coating. I know, I've experienced cleaning roofs that have been treated. As I tell homeowners, if these coatings would benefit, wouldn't it be applied during the manufacturing process. NO BRAINER!!
