THIS CAN'T BE RIGHT...sodium hydrochlorite voiding warranty???

hey guys was cruising round some pressure washing forums today just checking out what they have to say about non-pressure washing...

i found one clown wrote this...i quote...

"Be aware, boyz-n-girlz, that GAF, the largest supplier of roofing shingles in North America will immediately void the warrantee their on roofing materials if they find out sodium hypochlorate (bleach) was used on said roof.
I know it works great, but this is just food for thought..."

The bloke was from Phantom Mobile Power Wash...

is this a fairy or tale or is it true because my apple cider mix uses bleach (sodium hypochlorite)

??????????????

The ARMA bulletin recommends the use of bleach. Good enough for me.

HAHA!!!! That's really funny, Phantom mobile wash will need to edit his post if he wants to keep from shoving both feet in his mouth.

Gramma always said "don't believe every thing you read"! We have documents posted here from the manufacturers, believe that! And have the documentation with you at all times to show the customers.

Just out of curiosity how do roofing companies determine if the roof is still valid for warranty or not?  Do they conduct a certain lab test of a shingle or do they determine that by visual observation?  Or perhaps some other method??

Thanks,

Mike Lacey

That's a good question Mike. I'm not a roofer or work for a roofing manufacturer so I couldn't give you an answer.

Just noting that GAF has moved the document on the algae problem since original postings.  Could this be the document in question?

not sure what the original link pointed to.

Here is GAFS warranty

http://www.powerwindowsandsiding.com/files/Roof_Warranty.pdf

It states commercial cleaning, and I know darn well it is NOT using a pressure washer.

So what are the choices left?? hmmm.

The ARMA bulletin is here

http://www.asphaltroofing.org/pdf/tb_217.pdf

But GAF's has disappeared. Maybe they want to sell more shingles instead?

Take Care
KIM

A call goes to the shingle rep, who will do an inspection and if he feels there is an issue he will start a claim.

Do they conduct a certain lab test of a shingle or do they determine that by visual observation?  Yes for the most part, they will want a few shingles removed and mailed in to their lab for testing and if found faulty will back up the warranty. Usually a prorated warranty

Main problem is finding the install date, usually if it is recent with in 5-6 years the installer should have the info from the supplier. If any one has a HO that is need of a warranty cleaning and cannot find the installer, a few calls to local supply houses can usually be done and researched by the address due to the delivery of materials, unless it was  p/u with no specifics to the job. Even if that fails, if you can figure out the shingle manufacturer and still call the rep.

Or perhaps some other method??

Some manufacturer's are better than others, GAF pretty easy to work with, others not so sure been installing GAF for many years.

ALWAYS get a copy of your material bill for this reason.

Take Care,
KIM ROUSSEAU
