GENTLMAN, has any one done a freebies in a hot location and was it worth it??? i have a spot picked out. but i am a little skeptic about it .need some advice.
If you have to do it for free, I would ask them to let you do 1/2 of the roof and leave it that way for a month. Get yourself a sign made that says something like "Look what Roof Clean can do for your roof" and leave the sign in the yard for that month.
People will take notice to the half clean roof. Then go back and clean the rest of the roof after a month. Then leave your sign up for another month. It should get some response.
People don't always notice a dirty or a clean roof, but they will probably notice a half clean roof a lot faster!
I haven't done it myself, but I have considered it.
Brian

I love Brain's idea but, don't expect instant return on your investment. I've had some campaigns that I swore couldn't miss yet still, I await the sounds of a ringing phone. Advertising is very much like a woman. Ya wine it, dine it, and still it doesn't put out! Getting your name out there at a HOT location can really pay off (or not).
I'm still looking for that perfect location so that I can clean the roof on angle or something that makes it stand out as much as possible. Gotta have good signage though.

I would do half of the roof, put up a yard sign or a banner and come back 2 weeks later to do the second half. This works wonders if you clean the first or second house in the entrance of a nice neighborhood.

Has anyone ever bought a table at a major flea market type venue, pulled up your lettered vehicle, put on your best polo and clip board, maybe a small banner with company name and logo, extra large snap shots of before and afters, give out educational literature, balloons for the children, etc. etc. whatever else you can think of and tried to land a few jobs? I was thinking of gearing up for something like this for 2010 and wondered if anyone had any experience with this.
I just drove around A 25 year old housing developent today and put flyers in there mail boxs copy two on a peice of paper and cut the in half I keep a hundred in the truck so when I pass through some place with dirty roofs I stop and take my dog for a walk and hit every house with flyer I get 2 calls for every hundred leith will do mildew.com
Thomas...your probably better off not doing free roof and instead upping your advertisements in that area. The chances that people other than the neighbors will notice the roof is minimal. i do love mikes idea though. The only issue i see is finding someone that will let you do that.
Leith, You should never put anything in a persons mailbox. It is a federal offense. They can take you to court and make you pay a large fine. i know a guy in my area that use to do this and he received a certified letter from the United postal Service, threatening jail time, although he was just fined.
I was threatened by the postmaster himself. He saw me in his own neighborhood. He was PISSED too! The reason that I'm not hanging from a yard-arm right now is that I convinced him that I only put my business card in two mailboxes at the request of my customer. Customer said that her friends would be happy to receive my business card.
Honestly, I've only ever touched TWO mailboxes in my life and I nearly got my azz handed to me.
I've also had estimates confiscated by the mailman (despite being asked by the prospect to leave it in their mailbox). The thing is, they clearly were NOT advertisements. They just don't want ya messing with "Post Office" stuff.

I was actually just getting ready to post about this and saw this discussion thread! I've already pinpointed a few homes and a fire station in my area that are high traffic with pretty bad looking roofs.
I was planning on offering to clean their roofs 'at cost' if they'd allow me to clean half, put up a lawn sign/advertisement for 3 weeks, then clean the other half. I've ran this idea past a few people and the general consensus seems to be that it would work.
Before reading this post I was actually planning on offering it for free and writing it off as an advertising expense, but after reading all your comments, I'm definitely going to try and shoot to at least do it 'at cost.' Thanks for all the info!
Yeah, fliers in the mailbox are definitely a no-go!
You could always go the route of small plastic bags with a hole in the top to slip over the mailbox flag. You don't have to worry about the legality of it and if you put some kind of keychain in the bag along with a pamphlet/literature the homeowner will be more likely to keep it than if it was just a sheet they had in with their mail.
