Just curious, has anyone used a product made by roofbclean called liqiud zinc? It is used as an inhibator. Let me know what your experience with it was if you have used it.

Never used it but I am sure it's more EXPENSIVE than SH. Inhibiting the growth would require it to stay attached to the shingles through rain storms and UV degradation. If it was going to be used as a treatment, you can do the same thing with a light solution of what we're using now. Treatment sprays are another end of this business that
I will be pursuing more, simply because once you get you local public realizing whats going on with their roof and it can be prevented rather than cleaned, I think it will open up work from HOA's and condo groups and such. Just comes down to what you'd rather sell, cleaning or maintenance,...I certainly believe doing both is worth while.

Spraying roofs without any growth opens up potentially every shingle roof as far as the eye can see.

It is definitely a good extra source of income for the business. It is about $90 for two one gallon jugs. It is 8:1 mix. It guarantees 12 month effectiveness, so I usually go back to the customer the following year after cleaning and put on an application. $50-200 an application depending on size, every year is going to save the customer a ton of money on having to replace and make you a ton of money. If you figure one $100 application a day, five days a week, that an extra $2000 a month. It is easy to make $300-500 of a gallon. Their website is www.zincshield.com. They also make zinc strips. They do call for you to mix in a table spoon of dishwashing detergent for every gallon of diluted mixture.

You would be better off mixing up your own for a lot less money. I spray a lot of roofs that way.

Visit my link to Copper Sulfate. It's Cheaper and just as effective if not more so.

We did it once, on the persistence of the customer. We bought it and sprayed it.

It didn't last 1 year here in Florida.

I think the problem with the zinc and the copper sulfate, is it simply doesn't work fast enough and is possibly rinsed off by the next cloud burst. I would hate to be wondering if it was on there long enough. Where as with SH it is instant results and there's no wondering.

All of the product information on copper and zinc say do not spray when rain is expected.
Well in a tropical climate like Florida that means your going to need to watch the weather very carefully.

It is Rain here in Tampa Right now biggrin we NEED it.
Look at Bennonote or Bentonite Clay David ?

There is a US Patent that references adding an Algeacide to Clay to spray on surfaces to kepp the Algae Growth down.

David,

Can you share more of your opinion's on using these types of algaecides or anti-fungals.

After reading about zinc and copper, using it etc. Do you still feel it is of No Value in our roof cleaning?

What about as a preventative?

If you have 3 months it'll clean a roof. No value

As a preventative its great, but its more money and weather dependent.

Personally I like the Copper over the Zinc. For us the cost of the copper is not good. I think we are in a battle for who can clean a roof for the least amount of money here.

example I bid $400
next bid $350
winning bid was $250

included the sw/dw and walls

So as you can see, even though there are better products and solutions, it may not matter. The market is always the deciding factor on the product.

I ran into a guy in town who said he was in the roof clean business for 5 years. I mentioned using bleach and he just pooh poed me and shook his head like i was an idiot.
He tells me to go to the agriculture/farm store and get a big bag of zinc sulphate for cheap and put it on around 5%. Said he'd been doing it for years. First he scrubs most of the big moss off and then applies the zinc sulphate. He seemed to be quite experienced and confident and also I am in the heart of moss country.
Gee all this talk about bleach and investing in equipment.
Can some fellow "moss land" cleaner set me straight. Bleach or zinc?

Scrubbing a roof is a big "pooh pooh". GAF even spells out in their tecnical bulletin not to try to broom or scrub off moss. It dislodges the granules.

U can get away with scrubbing a tile roof maybe, but it will take the granules off a shingle roof. But Zinc is a very effective Moss Preventer.
