I do not live near, nor work in any big cities. I do not want to become a big business, I want to remain father and son only. If you are in a similar situation, my tactics may help you through the summer in Florida or other southern states and :with a twist on types of work- in other states?
I not only have a roof cleaning business, I have a licensed painting & pressure cleaning business, a lic landscape business and a lic lawn business too! When pressure cleaning and roof cleaning are slow, the lawn / landscape work picks up. If any of you need a side business to keep you busier in the summer, you might want to consider mowing and landscape maintenance [I have about 28 jobs that I maintain landscapes on and only 8 lawns that I mow at present and that amounts to about $1800.00 a month and maybe 4 - 12 hours a week - depending on the time of year- in labor. Most lawns are like $70 -$100.00 a month year round. I do them 1 time a month Dec,-March and 2 x a month April,May,June & nov. and 3x a month in the rainy season. Same with the weeding/landscape jobs-which are all seperate from the lawns. I'm building 4 seperate businesses and plan to sell the lawn business, when it reaches a certain value, then the Painting & Pressure washing business in 3 parts- Port Charlotte area-Venice area-then Englewood area. In the end, if I ain't dead first, i'm just gonna do roof cleaning and retire in a year and a half at 62. That's the plan, but you know what they say about "the best laid plans"
Hope my ideas are of some help to anyone here? Chuck

You are welcome! Of course, if you are able to just do roofs, all the better! That would be my choice! But, I wouldn't make it financially, as I advertise now and with the work I do presently. I make probably $50,000 + a year on just no pressure cleaning of roofs, but that includes me and my son's income. Then another $25,000 on pressure washing and the rest on lawns and landscapes.

I know what you mean about small towns and I have been hashing over some other ideas to add services to make up for the slack times and enable me to give family members a job and possibly a future.
Here are some ideas that I have been kicking around.
1. Pressure washing drive ways and walkways.
2. Fire supression systems and fire extinguisher service and repair.
3. To go along with fire supression I would also like to add kitchen exhaust system cleaning.
4. Pickup mounted parking lot sweeper/vac. clean up malls and restaurant parking lots.
The other thing adding services to your existing business is the simple fact that it gets you on the property. It gives people other reasons to call you, and then they find out what else you do, and you may end up with more work.
i'm the same way, I try to stay out of their business as long as the job gets done right. I don't beleive in micro managing unless absolutley necessary. and if were at that point then its time for a replacement.

Sounds like you are a very busy man. More power to you, why have one income when you can have multiple.

My wife and I are begining to negotiate rates with a local bank for general maintenance of foreclosed properties. Nothing too involved, just the basics including a weekly dusting and vacuum for the inside and weekly mowing outside. Hopefully this will pan out and turn into another revenue stream.

Another revenue stream is MOLD and Mildew pre-treatment for new construction and for foundations and footings.
We ALL have the pumps and hose and ability to DO this right NOW.
Being able to go into a new subdivision build out and PRE-TREAT EVERY NEW home be it Framed or other home with an algaecide/fungicide after the footers and foundations is poured and BEFORE the VISQUEEN is laid.
This can PREVENT Mold and MILDEW and FUNGUS in crawlspaces which can lead to "SICK HOME SYNDROME" or BLACK MOLD in between walls and insulation.
Adding this can add a SUBSTANTIAL REVENUE BOOST if properly marketed and applied.
Hope this helps turn the light on for OTHER ways to use your equipment?

What about someone getting new siding on an older home to go and clean the home and kill the mold before the new siding goes on. My neighbor said he was getting new siding and I told him he has mold on the siding he has now and that I could kill it off and clean his roof all a few days before the new siding goes on.

No more walking in the woods to find my mushrooms!!
Have you ever thought about residential window cleaning? That is what I currently do and I'm looking very closely at starting a new roof cleaning business.
This forum is awesome. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent reading already and I still feel I have a lot of research to do. A lot of priceless information to soak in before I starting spreading LOVE.
I don't really have anything to add regarding roof cleaning right now, but if anyone wants to know anything about residential window cleaning I'm more than happy to share what I know.

I have considered a residentail window cleaning add-on business. Only problem I find down here is that almost 100% of the windows have mosquito screens on them. I find these to be a PITA and time consuming...maybe I need a better technique and more patience.
